چکیده

The thesis ‘Genetics of Attention and Executive Functioning’ examined the genetic architecture of attention problems, attention, executive functioning, and intelligence (IQ). In addition, the (longitudinal) genetic relation among attention problems, executive functioning and IQ were investigated. Data were collected twice in a sample of twin children registered at the Netherlands Twin Registry (NTR): when they were 5 years old, and seven years later, when they were 12 years old. In this last chapter the results as presented in this thesis and other publications that have resulted from this project will be summarized and discussed. First the genetic architecture of attention problems as assessed by different instruments and by different raters at ages 5 and 12 years is summarized. Next, an overview of the genetic studies on executive functioning and IQ, and their relation to attention problems is presented. Finally, the results of this thesis are discussed and put into the perspective of future directions for research into attention and attention problems.

Genetic analyses of the stability of executive functioning during childhood.

Executive functioning is an umbrella term for several related cognitive functions like selective- and sustained attention, working memory, and inhibition. Little is known about the stability of executive functioning during childhood. In this study the longitudinal stability of executive functioning was examined in young twins. The twin design enables to investigate genetic and environmental con...

Sustained attention and executive functioning performance in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The aim of this study was to further refine the cognitive phenotype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with respect to the ability to sustain attention and executive functioning. Participants were 34 boys with ADHD (combined type) and 28 normal controls. The groups were closely matched for age and IQ. All participants were 12 years of age. Both groups performed a computerized s...

A longitudinal twin study on IQ, executive functioning, and attention problems during childhood and early adolescence.

Variation in human behavior may be caused by differences in genotype and by non-genetic differences ("environment") between individuals. The relative contributions of genotype (G) and environment (E) to phenotypic variation can be assessed with the classical twin design. We illustrate this approach with longitudinal data collected in 5 and 12-year-old Dutch twins. At age 5 data on cognitive abi...

Attention problems, inhibitory control, and intelligence index overlapping genetic factors: a study in 9-, 12-, and 18-year-old twins.

It is assumed that attention problems (AP) are related to impaired executive functioning. We investigated the association between AP and inhibitory control and tested to what extent the association was due to genetic factors shared with IQ. Data were available from 3 independent samples of 9-, 12-, and 18-year-old twins and their siblings (1,209 participants). AP were assessed with checklists c...

Cortical morphology as a shared neurobiological substrate of attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms and executive functioning: a population-based pediatric neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms have repeatedly been associated with poor cognitive functioning. Genetic studies have demonstrated a shared etiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cognitive ability, suggesting a common underlying neurobiology of ADHD and cognition. Further, neuroimaging studies suggest that altered cortical development is related to A...
